Saumya Pandey, a gold medallist from the prestigious Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad, secured the fourth rank in Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, results of which were declared on Wednesday.

A trained classical dancer, Saumya said her aim of becoming a civil servant is to serve the society on a large scale as in the role of an electrical engineer, which she completed in 2015, she would have been serving just a section of society.

Saumya, a trained Kathak dancer from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, is also a skilled basketball player and had captained her school team.

The only child of Dr Sadhana Pandey, a gynaecologist by profession, and Dr Ravi Pandey, owner of a computer institute, Saumya was the CBSE district topper in Class 10 from Army School in 2009 by securing 98%. She repeated her performance in Class 12 from the same school and was again district topper in 2011 with 97.8% marks.

At MNNIT, Saumya completed her electrical engineering with a gold medal in 2015. Saumya had opted for Geography as an optional subject.

Allahabad returned to the merit list in UPSC examinations after a gap of six years — Iva Sahai, daughter of an Allahabad University professor, had secured third in 2009.

Talking to TOI, Saumya said “I became serious about preparing for civil service exams during my final year of engineering and devoted myself for the past one year”, giving full credit to her parents Dr RK Pandey and Dr Sadhana Pandey for their unflinching support.
“When I appeared for exams realised that I had done well, but all-India fourth rank is really surprising,” she added.
Karnataka girl Nandini KR topped the exams while Anmol Sher Singh Bedi and G Ronanki bagged the second and third positions respectively.
A total of 1099 candidates has been recommended for appointment to IAS IFS and IPS and Central services after the final results.

While doing engineering, she started to dream about becoming an IAS officer. She has always been a brilliant student. Her parents never interfered in her career choice and they let her prepare for Civil Services rather than joining MNC with a fat salary.
