10 Amazing Myths about IAS Exam

10 Amazing Myths about IAS Exam

Myths about IAS Exam

On coming across IAS aspirants, emails, blog comments and forum posts with many queriesregarding IAS exam and how to prepare for it but much of it is myths or incorrect information they gathered up from various sources. This is to provide you with correct information about he IAS exam and remove all your misinformation.

1.One need to study for 15-20 hours a day.

It is the most believable myth of IAS exam is the in order to clear it you need to study for 18 – 20 hours or sometimes even for 24 hours. It is not possible for any human being to focus continuously on one particular topic for 15 hours or more.Mindless slogging is not at all required. You should only do smart and focused studies. If you study with consistency and focus then it doesn’t matter whether you study for 10 hours or 20 hours.

2.Selection of two optional subjects:

It is still believed that there are selections for two optional subjects in Mains. Dear aspirants the pattern changed in 2013, and now you only need to select just one optional subject instead of two.

3.Reading all NCERT booksfor prelims:

It is very obvious that you need to read NCERT books. But it doesn’t mean that you go through each and every NCERT book for prelims. There are particular Ncert books that you should read for prelims.

4.Have to read dozen of books for Prelims and Mains both:

Your aim is to crack IAS exam and not to do masters in IAS. You only require a smart study with smart study material. Reading dozen of books will gain you nothing instead it will build up tension in your mind. Stick to a good quality of books whose language is feasible for you. Do not follow all the books which your coaching institutions and peers recommend you.

5.This prestigious exam is almost impossible:

IAS is an independent exam which requires its own approach to achieving success. If one goes through statistics of this exam you will find that 900 aspirants are cracking this exam every year and gets selected in various services. This exam is very much doable and only requires hard work and a will to do attitude. Agreed to the fact that this is a really tough process but not impossible process.

6.Being non-English candidate is a disadvantage:

Your language is not a barrier for you, in fact, your lack of confidence and giving -up attitude is. Language is never an obstacle for any candidates who belong from vernacular languages. There are arrangements for all the student irrespective of their language. You should always select the language in which you are confident and which is most comfortable for you. Every year numerous students from the non-English background are clearing the civil services exam.

7.Age limit:

As long as you are eligible for this exam you have chances of clearing this exam. There have been many candidates who attempted this exam during the last ages of their eligibility and have cleared the exam. It’s never too late to attempt the IAS exam Provided you have a definite plan and willpower to make it.

8.IAS is the most powerful service and once you achieve it you are the King:

IAS is a service that offers you the best opportunity to do good for your country. That does not mean it is the most powerful job in India. Rather, it is the politicians who wield the real power. Do not join the IAS if the only motivation is power. This job is only for those who have a desire for doing good for the welfare of society.

9.No need of writing practise or attemptingmock tests:

Attempting any exam, and not just IAS, without proper practice beforehand is like shooting in the without having bullets in your gun.It is very important to have yourself tested before entering the exam hall. After all, you don’t want to blow up a crucial attempt and an entire year of hard work simply due to lack of practice. That’s why you need to know the importance of a good test series for IAS.

10.Requirement of luck:

Good luck and bad luck factor is really not very applicable here. The only thing that works over is here is your attitude towards it and your hard work. Luck and chance play a role in varying degrees in any endeavour of our life. But that does not mean it is the only thing that matters.Y ou should focus on your preparation

Banks to start charging for P2P payments on UPI

Banks to start charging for P2P payments on UPI

Country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has come out with charges with effect from June 1, while the second largest private sector lender HDFC Bank has also gone public with its rate structure which will be effective July 10.

Nearly two years after operationalisation of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), banks have started moving to charge for peer-to-peer payments on the new platform.

Country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has come out with charges with effect from June 1, while the second largest private sector lender HDFC Bank has also gone public with its rate structure which will be effective July 10.

"So far, no bank is charging for UPI transactions but at the same time it is at their discretion to levy a reasonable fee towards Person to Person (P2P) transactions for UPI and IMPS," National Payments Corporation of India's chief operating officer Dilip Asbe said in a statement.

A senior NPCI official explained that the world over, charges are levied for such transactions and added that in the case of UPI at merchant transactions it is the merchant who pays while for P2P, it is the sender who has to pay.

On the transaction fees front, the critical aspect to be examined is whether there are enough number of transactions happening on UPI which establish a maturity of the platform and also the reasonableness of charges, the official added.

The UPI platform is averaging around one crore transactions with a value of Rs 2,900 crore per month, the NPCI official said, adding the number of transactions needs to be at least 2-3 crore per month for the charges to set in.

The NPCI official said there may be a review on the subject, saying there can be a meeting with bankers which can be called in the next two months to assess the situation.

It was, however, not immediately clear if the P2P transactions on the BHIM App launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will also be chargeable.

When contacted, SBI's deputy managing director Manju Agarwal acknowledged that the bank has put out a circular on UPI charges on its website, but promised to withdraw it soon.

"We are not charging for UPI transactions. The circular will be removed," she said.

An HDFC Bank spokesperson was not reachable for comment, but a senior official pointed out that the charges are applicable from July 10 and there may be a review based on the outcome of such a meeting with NPCI.

SBI is charging Rs 5 per transaction of up to Rs 1 lakh, Rs 15 for transactions between Rs 1-2 lakh and Rs 25 for those between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, while HDFC Bank is proposing Rs 3 for transactions of up to Rs 25,000 and Rs 5 for those between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1 lakh.

Billed as a game-changing platform in the Indian banking space, UPI was launched in April 2015 and operationalised in August same year.

The 10 facts you need to know about ISRO’s GSLV-Mk III

The 10 facts you need to know about ISRO’s GSLV-Mk III

The GSLV-Mk III-D1 launcher would carry GSAT-19 satellite which has a mass of 3,200 kg.

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III), the heaviest rocket ever made by India and capable of carrying large payloads, is set for launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on June 5, 2017.

Here are a few facts you need to know about the rocket.

1. GSKV-Mk III is capable of launching four-tonne satellites in the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

2. The rocket is also capable of placing up to eight tonnes in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), enough to carry a manned module.

3. GSLV-Mk III’s first developmental flight, D1, will carry on June 5 the GSAT-19 satellite — developed to help improve telecommunication and broadcasting areas.

4. This is India’s first fully functional rocket to be tested with a cryogenic engine that uses liquid propellants — liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

5. It took about 25 years, 11 flights and over 200 tests on different components of the rocket for it to be fully realised.

6. The 640-tonne rocket, equal to the weight of 200 fully-grown Asian elephants, is the country’s heaviest but shortest rocket with a height of 43 metre.

7. GSLV-Mk III is a three-stage vehicle with two solid motor strap-ons (S200), a liquid propellant core stage (L110) and a cryogenic stage (C-25).

8. ISRO successfully conducted the static test of its largest solid booster S200 at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota on January 24, 2010. The successful test of S200, which forms the strap-on stage for the GSLV, makes it the third largest solid booster in the world. The static test of liquid core stage (L110) of GSLV-Mk III launch vehicle was done at ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre test facility as early as March 2010.

9. C-25, the large cryogenic upper stage of the GSLV, is the most difficult component of the launch vehicle to be developed. ISRO successfully ground-tested the indigenously developed C-25 on February 18, 2017.

10. If successful, the GSLV-Mk III — earlier named as Launch Vehicle Mark-3 or LVM-3 — could be India’s vehicle of choice to launch people into space.

AS preparation strategy by Avdhesh Meena AIR 32 UPSC 2016(First Attempt)

AS preparation strategy by Avdhesh Meena AIR 32 UPSC 2016(First Attempt)

I cleared it in my first attempt with AIR 32.

Below is my strategy which I followed.

First of all few basic points to be kept in mind before preparing and during preparation-

1. There is no perfect or single strategy to succeed. I listened to various strategies by toppers and then choose the one which best suited me as per my skills and understanding.
2. There is no alternative to hard work and dedication, which is the prime strategy of success.
3. Preparation for civil services is a full time exercise. Please do not indulge yourself in other exams like SSC etc especially if you need to read anything extra for other exams. Do not prepare for multiple exams at once.
4. Don't treat studies as a burden. Prepare only if you enjoy the studies. Enjoy the process of learning new things.
5. Be observant of your surroundings, The real world and studies are not mutually different, they are an extension of each other. Try to observe things around you, link them with your studies and vice versa.
6. Try to keep social life to minimum. Keep the contact with social media to minimum.
7. Choose a friend circle with those who are preparing seriously. Keep in contact with them as to how they are preparing and contact them if you feel depressed or are not able to study. But don't excessively rely on their strategies too, follow your own way.
8. Keeping in touch with family especially parents is the most important aspect to handle ups and lows during preparation. Share with them your feelings during preparation.
9. Do not think excessively about results, just focus on your strategy. I never seriously thought whether i would qualify or not, I was just focused on my studies. "Karm karte jao, fal ki chinta mat karo, wo apne aap mil jayega". I have seen people who are too much depressed and loose their study questioning themselves whether they will qualify or not.
10. Do not involve yourself excessively in political debates as to this leader is good or that. There is no point in doing that and would drain you of energy. Focus only on specific steps taken by government which are needed in exams and analyse those with both positives and negative and then forming a balanced viewpoint and an optimistic solution for future.
11. Read one newspaper daily for about 1.5 hours. I read the Hindu. Try to improve your understanding of different topics from the news. Read anything which is related to constitution, SC judgments, govt schemes, social issues, economic issues such as poverty, development etc, environmental issues like new species being discovered, major developments in science and technology.
12. If you are a newcomer or are in college time your preparation in a way so that you start 2 years before the actual year of exam you will appear. 2 years is the optimum time for preparation.
13. Role of coaching is important in various aspects - regular time table, concise study material for some subjects, understanding of basic concepts in some subjects. But Civil Services can be done even without coaching especially with growing availability of online material which is useful.
14. Role of choosing the correct optional is immense. I owe my success mostly to optional. I would preferably suggest you to take your graduation subject as an optional especially if you are an engineer. So those in college i would like to suggest please do not neglect the studies in college especially if you want to take your graduation subject as an optional. But do not choose Engineering if not able to understand technical concepts or you have interest and expertise in other subjects. This assessment has to be made by you without any prejudices. Also in general it would take more time to study the Engineering subject. Please ask yourself do you have the required aptitude to choose Engineering as optional and if you feel you can do it go for it. There is no concept of scaling in marks, do not worry about that. Choosing technical subject as an optional lessens the arbitrariness present in other arts subjects.

Now coming to my strategy

I prepared for total of 2 years before writing the prelims exam. I started preparing in my final year B tech. I took coaching from Vajiram and Ravi in 2014-15 batch with my college. In this year I got myself familiarized with basic concepts, basic books needed and attended Vajiram test series for prelims. Thus i was clear with my basics by the end of the year.
In the second year I started preparing for optional and answer writing for Mains. I joined Vision IAS Mains Test series for answer writing. I also wrote answers (preferably 1-2 answers) on Insights occasionally and then read other answers posted there and then analyse how i lacked in formulation of answers. Further the role of test series in improving my answer writing is enormous. I used to analyse my marks after each test as to what i was doing right or wrong and improve thereupon in the next test.

My optional was Civil Engineering. I had interest in Civil and also I was good in Civil in my college which helped me a lot to get 356 marks in mains exam. I purchased the hand written notes from market and took coaching booklets from my friend. I studied the hand written notes and referred to coaching books only if i was not able to understand something. I appeared for GATE and ESE examination to check my knowledge of Civil Engineering and got AIR 54 and AIR 9 respectively. Also the fact that there is an exam pushes you towards the preparation and helps in concluding the preparation fast.
I did not attend any coaching for Civil Engineering. I was not able to join test series because I joined the GS test series during the time and was not able to do both simultaneously.

BOOKS To be read-
1. Polity- Laxmikant (more imp for pre), Vajiram notes
2. Modern Histroy - Spectrum (imp for both pre+mains), NCERT (not necessarry to read it), Vajiram notes
3. Ancient History and culture - NCERT, Vajiram Notes, Mrunal Videos on Art and culture
4. Medieval History- NCERT (although I did not studied it but now UPSC is asking more about medieval nowdays)
5. Environment- Shankar IAS
6. Economics - Class notes, 11,12th NCERT
7. Geography- 11,12th NCERT , Class Notes
8. World History- Vision IAS add on material, Class notes
9. International relations- Newspaper, Vision current affairs
10.Science and Tech- Newspaper, Vision Current affairs
11. Security - Newspaper, Vision Current affairs
12. Social Issues- Newspaper, Vision Current affairs
13. Disaster management- Class notes, vision value added material, Vision Current affairs
14. Ethics- Class notes

15. Civil Engineering- No books only coaching material.

For prelims practice- Vision tests and study them thoroughly.

I tried to keep the number of books to be studied at minimum. Only those book should be studied which can be revised in a month before exam. Instead focus should be more on revising at least 3-4 times, practicing test series for both prelims and mains, current affairs which should be studied thoroughly and practicing optional more.

Saumya Pandey, a gold medallist from the prestigious Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad, secured the fourth rank in Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, results of which were declared on Wednesday.

A trained classical dancer, Saumya said her aim of becoming a civil servant is to serve the society on a large scale as in the role of an electrical engineer, which she completed in 2015, she would have been serving just a section of society.

Saumya, a trained Kathak dancer from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, is also a skilled basketball player and had captained her school team.

The only child of Dr Sadhana Pandey, a gynaecologist by profession, and Dr Ravi Pandey, owner of a computer institute, Saumya was the CBSE district topper in Class 10 from Army School in 2009 by securing 98%. She repeated her performance in Class 12 from the same school and was again district topper in 2011 with 97.8% marks.

At MNNIT, Saumya completed her electrical engineering with a gold medal in 2015. Saumya had opted for Geography as an optional subject.

Allahabad returned to the merit list in UPSC examinations after a gap of six years — Iva Sahai, daughter of an Allahabad University professor, had secured third in 2009.

Talking to TOI, Saumya said “I became serious about preparing for civil service exams during my final year of engineering and devoted myself for the past one year”, giving full credit to her parents Dr RK Pandey and Dr Sadhana Pandey for their unflinching support.
“When I appeared for exams realised that I had done well, but all-India fourth rank is really surprising,” she added.
Karnataka girl Nandini KR topped the exams while Anmol Sher Singh Bedi and G Ronanki bagged the second and third positions respectively.
A total of 1099 candidates has been recommended for appointment to IAS IFS and IPS and Central services after the final results.

While doing engineering, she started to dream about becoming an IAS officer. She has always been a brilliant student. Her parents never interfered in her career choice and they let her prepare for Civil Services rather than joining MNC with a fat salary.

Saumya Pandey joined Dhyey IAS Coaching Institute and started preparation. With dedication, determination and right direction, she is able to sail through all three barriers of UPSC Civil Services Examination.

UPSC CSE 2016

Jun 2, 2017

ONLINECONCEPT

UPSC CSE 2016
